‪‪#Signboard: A signboard connotes identity, purpose and address of the organisation. It stands as a marker of the identity of the owner and asserts the purpose of the business/enterprise/institution. Congress has a signboard, assenting its glorious past and bright future. All the colours of a multiregional, multicultural, multilingual and multilreligious identities of India is portrayed in the Congress signboard. Trinamool derives its existence from this signboard. Time and again TMC needs to show its lineage and linkages with the Congress signboard. It is constantly nibbling at the Congress signboard as TMC does not have a past and no direction of a future. It forcibly occupies offices displaying Congress signboard in blocks and districts. Without the protection of Congress signboard, TMC will wither away, sooner than latter.

‪‪#‎JuvenileJustice‬: Supreme Court has rightly rejected the plea of the Delhi Commission for Women to detain the juvenile involved in the rape of Nirbhaya beyond the three year imprisonment he completed yesterday. Under the existing law, juveniles can not be sentenced for a crime beyond three years and the Courts can not go beyond the law to uphold public sentiment. Even if Parliament amends the law and provides for additional quantum of punishment for heinous crimes, the same can not be applicable retrospectively. This is clearly spelled out ,and as part of the Fundamental Rights chapter, in the Constitution that a person can not be punished for a crime twice and can not be given sentence beyond what is provided in the law at the time of commission of offence. Many people do not understand the limitations on the powers of the Court in India. Court must determine and decide cases "in accordance with the procedure established by law". This is in the Constitution. Indian Courts are not as powerful as the American Courts where "due process of law" principle allows Courts to decide not only on the basis of what is in the law but also what could or should the law may be.

‪#‎‪‎PakPolicy‬ PM Modi has belatedly realised the value of engaging with Pakistan. Now the government is in overdrive. Following 'sudden' NSA level meeting in Bangkok, External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj has travelled to Islamabad. Gone is the false bravado and false propaganda. I would say it is vital and valuable to follow Congress policy in foreign policy and international relations. Good.

‪#‎CongressComeback‬ Congress is making a strong comeback in Gujarat, evidenced by the trend in Gujarat municipal and panchayat election results. While BJP is ahead in corporation areas, district and rural areas are witnessing strong showing by Congress.

‪‪‪#‪‎Grand Success: Glad for the success of the ‪#‎NehruLegacySeminar‬ organised by me for the West Bengal Pradesh Congress Committee. Not only that Birla Sabhaghar was packed to capacity and hundreds waiting outside the auditorium, each of the speakers shined---Prof. Hossainur Rahman, Amb. K Srinivasan, Ms. Teesta Setalvad, Prof. G Mohan Gopal, Shri Somnath Chatterjee (main speaker) and Shri Adhir Ranjan Chaudhuri(Chair). Glad that Times of India, Hindustan Times, The Hindu, The Indian Express, Free Press Journal, Business Standard, Gulf News, The Telegraph, the Statesman, Dainik Statesman, Bartaman, Aajtak, Ananda Bazar Patrika, Uttar Banga Sambad, Ganashakti ansd many more including Hindi and Urdu newspapers have carried the details of the significant initiative by Congress. JDU, RJD,PDS, Nyaya Vichar Party, IUML, WBSP, MFB, RCPI, RSP, Forward Bloc, CPI, CPI(M) and many other political parties attended. Rajya Sabha MP Shri Mukul Roy was present too. CPI(M) had deputed a 10 member delegation including Shriu Robin Deb, Dr Sujan Chakraborti, Shri Ritabrata Banerjee, Shri shamik Lahiri, Shri ashok Bhattacharaya(Siliguri Mayor). Somnath Chatterjee has given a call for ‪#‎BiharModel‬ in west Bengal. people of Bengal are hopeful.

‪‪‪#‪‎LiberalIndia‬ More and more people from different sectors of life and cutting across states are raising their voices for a tolerant, inclusive, pluralistic and liberal India. The protests being registered by leading light of literature and culture is significant and encouraging. The movement would gather further momentum.

‪‪‪#‪#‎‪#‎IndoNepalRelations‬ Indo-Nepal Relations have suffered some significant damage lately. Nepal has inaugurated a new Constitution, working on it through last several years. Certain aspects of the Constitution are not sufficiently accommodative of regional and ethnic aspirations, particularly of Madhesi people. The related issues must be addressed by people of Nepal. We must not say or do something that smacks of big brotherly approach and attitude. But precisely this has happened. Modi government's inept handling of the situation, poor diplomacy and overtly moralising approach has created new complications in #IndoNepalRelations. Unfortunately correct.

September 24, 2015

‪‪‪#‪#‎BlotOnDemocracy‬ Deputy Speaker of West Bengal Legislative Assembly TMC MLA Ms. Sonali Guha has been in the news for her intemperate behaviour, foul language and threatening style. In addition, what has caught everyone's attention is her clear admission that her party indulges in election rigging. This, she claims, TMC has learned from CPI(M). CPI (M) notoriously used to rig election and they have bequeathed the inglorious legacy to a willing and over enthusiastic TMC. Either way, it is a shame and blot on democracy in Bengal.

‪‪‪#‎MarketCrash‬ Economic vulnerabilities induced by market crash attests to the interdependent nature of world economy whereby national financial security gets jeopardized. Financial security therefore should become an important concern to be prioritized.

July 21, 2015

‪‪#‎MaunModi‬ Rajnath Singh has set a 'high' standard. Despite committing gross impropriety and illegality, NDA ministers and BJP leaders have a 'right' to continue in office. "Resignations happen in UPA and not in NDA". This is so right. Ministers under the UPA had to resign in response to allegations of impropriety ( P K Bansal, Aswini Kumar, Shashi Tharoor, Ashok Chavan). Now under the BJP rule, Sushma Swaraj, Vasundhara Raje, Shivraj Chauhan , Raman Singh can continue in power. After all they are BJP and PM Modi has become Maun Modi. Great going.

‪#‎Cheap: I am convinced ‪#‎Yoga‬ is great for physical fitness and overall health. I am also convinced that government should not invoke or involve aspects and issues related to religion and nationalism. Government should also not be seen promoting it for the sake of world record for ‪#‎Guinness‬ Book. This seems so cheap. Why should government involve itself in what essentially is in the domain of individual choice, family, associations and NGOs.

June 14, 2015

‪#‎SushmaHelpedLalit‬ It is increasingly clear our external affairs minister Ms. Sushma Swaraj has committed a very big impropriety by helping out Mr. Lalit Modi, charged by enforcement directorate. #SushmaHelpedLalit and PM Modi has no choice but to seek Sushma Swaraj 's resignation. It is better if the external affairs minister herself resigns, rather than bear the embarrassment. Interestingly, BJP leaders are fighting shy of media and have cancelled their press conference.

Strategy and Diplomacy: India must stand up to desperate acts of terror by extremists. We need to build up partnership with neighbouring countries to address cross border terrorism. We have achieved a measure of cooperation with Bangladesh in this respect. Same is correct about Myanmar. Operation Golden Bird joint operation with Myanmar was one aspect of this cooperation. Agreement with Myanmar in this respect in 2010 was yet milestone. Military operations could be overt or covert. Overt military operation inside a neighbouring countries territory without consent of the country is a strict no no, under international law and as well as Charter of the United Nations. Indian Army in its briefing to the media referred to two operations along India-Myanmar border. It did not specify the location or did not say that operation was inside Myanmar territory. Government of India has also not come out in the open to say that military operation was inside Myanmar territory. However, media and some of PM Modi's ministers are maintaining that we have carried out the operation inside Myanmar and that we will do so whenever, wherever necessary. This is being done to soar the image of the PM and as a propaganda tool for BJP. This is at the cost of national security. It is with most difficulty that relations with Myanmar which was almost non existent for about 30 years ( 1960s-1980s) was improved beginning mid 1990s. Our access and our relations with Myanmar are going to suffer with the type of propaganda being indulged by people in government and BJP leaders. Long term interest of the country is being sacrificed for the purpose of gaining immediate political mileage. This is a flawed strategy if we wish to continue receiving cooperation of our neighbour. We can not be seen to be trampling on the sovereignty of Myanmar. But if we did get their cooperation and implied consent, then we should not go out showcasing our success at the cost of huge embarrassment for a country which cooperates with us. Flawed strategy. Fight against extremism, terrorism can not be reduced to instant propaganda. Bad diplomacy.

Kharagpur: 7 opposition councillors were forced to defect to TMC from BJP and Left Front on the eve of the election of the Chairman of Kharagpur municipality. Money power and violence, use of police machinery and filling of false cases-- all this combined to help Trinamool secure support of BJP and Left Front councillors. Glad to note that 11 Congress councillors stood their ground and though forced out of the city remained united to expose the TMC.

Delhi Deadlock: unfortunate situation is unfolding in Delhi. AAP CM Kejriwal and Lt. Governor Jang have started a battle that would harm the political and constitutional processes in the national capital. How can we have a Chief Secretary appointed by LG who does not enjoys the confidence of the CM. Agreed that Delhi CM has limited powers but the government is a duly elected one. It seems it is the Ministry of Home Affairs of the BJP led central government that is up to some mischief. On his part, AAP government should also realise its responsibilities and not vitiate the situation. Is it necessary to go to the Court? seems that would only end the 'deadlock"

April 19, 2015

Violence: The corporation election in Kolkata has been reduced to a farce by the Trinamool. Congress candidates, supporters and Congress dominated areas were especially targeted by the ruling party for intimidation and violence. CPIM stronghold were also subjected to extensive rigging. The Chief Minister did not utter a single word condemning the firing on a police sub inspector even while she visited him in a nursing home. How could she as the policeman was fired upon by the TMC miscreants when they were attacking the house of a Congress candidate.

March 30, 2015

Poetry and Prose: Reading the book on by PM Modi by Lance Price. PM gave him series of interviews and the book tries to detail "The Modi Effect: Inside Narendra Modi's Campaign to Transform India". The author quotes Mario Quomo, a former governor of New York who said f politicians "you campaign in poetry, you govern in prose" . Well that sums it all.

Congress Volunteers: it was indeed a satisfying meeting of volunteers and members, in large numbers, at Shahid Surya Sen Bhavan, Jodhpur Park, Kolkata, to discuss, devise and decide on innovative measures to help rejuvenate Congress in Bengal. PCc leadership represented in the meeting included Shri D P Ray, MLA, and PCc General Secretaries Dr Maya Ghosh, Shri Manoj Pandey and Shri Tulsi Mukherjee. I chaired the meeting which saw the enthusiastic participation of volunteers from Jalpaiguri and Ketugram, Rishra and Halishahar and yet other parts of the state, not to mention Kolkata and neighbouring districts. Notable was the contribution of Partha Sarathi Biswas, a lawyer from Barasat who welcomed and Devjyoti Chaudhury of Sonarpur who proposed a vote of thanks. Abhishek Banerjee of Lake Town made a power point presentation and Mr Prasun took the lead in organising the logistics. Shri D P Ray was very inspiring in his address. While Manoj Pandey explained the AICC practices on social media, Dr Maya Ghosh made the big point that this meeting is largely made up of the youths and that is a big and welcome surprise. Decisions adopted through interaction and short intervention included focus on political training and publications, strengthening social media base and empowerment through information (RTI), and raising volunteer base to reach out to designated weakest and strongest booths in each of the 294 Assembly constituencies of West Bengal. Various aspects of follow up were decided and it would be soon that the creative and positive energy harnessed would be channelised in the interest of the party for the sake of Bengal .

March 11, 2015

Dr Manmohan Singh: There is a lot of hullabaloo over former PM Dr Singh being summoned by a local CBI Court to appear before it as ' accused'. Manmohan Singh has already said that he is more than willing to stand up to legal scrutiny. Earlier, CBI had filled closure report in this case. Since the cases have been reopened, it is well and fine. Let the legal and that the judicial processes be on. Dr Manmohan Singh and Congress are going to emerge unscathed and taller. But let the Modi government be ready to implement the Lok Pal Act. All this is good for transparency and our democracy.

Confusion galore: Who released Musarat Alam? PDP says it consulted BJP. PM Modi and his party says they did not know! Local BJP is demanding rearrest. Central BJP is either evasive or speaking in different voices. Now NDTV claims the release was already decided before PDP-BJP government took over in early February. The state of Jammu & Kashmir at that time was under Governor's rule, that is under central government. Any clarity please.

February 3, 2015

In terms of performance, some of the worst departments and ministries in West Bengal are directly under the Chief Minister. Home Department (police) is most notorious-- for inaction and inefficiency and completely subservient to the political interest of the ruling party. Police, however, is on an overdrive wherever and whenever it is a question of framing the opposition in false cases and in silencing critics and dissenters.

February 2, 2015

Mamata Banerjee has become the cry baby of West Bengal politics. She is most worried abut a split in her party. Why should she fear a split? She split Congress, weakened the fight against the Left Front and has been a master in engineering defection. Her TMC is made of defectors. Now its pay time.

BJP Game: The civil society movement India Against Corruption led by Anna Hazare was used by BJP and many of the 'stalwarts' were BJP sympathisers. Examples: Baba Ramdev, Gen. V.K. Singh, Kiran Bedi and so on. It was less a movement against corruption. Rather a movement against Congress. Leaders of AAP are saying this on record that these people were busy shielding BJP from any adverse criticism and wanted the focus solely against Congress. Now these people are being nominated and accommodated by BJP.

January 21, 2015

AICC has endorsed the stand of the state Congress on the issue of Mr. Kapil Sibal taking up a brief on behalf of State government. It is expected that Mr. Sibal would respect the sentiment of the Congress workers and supporters.

Babaism: Central government is continuing its interference in the work of independent bodies. Censor Board Chairperson has resigned. A film promoting baba Ram Rahim, MSG, has been cleared for release in a matter of few hours after the Censor Board rejected it. It was cleared by an appellate tribunal. BJP is hellbent on promoting babas of different hues and varieties. Forget promotion of scientific temper. It's mythology and superstition that BJP wants to feed Indians.

January 14, 2015

Same Song: It is necessary to debunk the notion that PM Modi, BJP, RSS-VHP- and numerous allied and related 'outfits". "fringe" elements are not on the same page. They are. PM Modi and the Sangha Parivar wants to encourage the 'distinction'. Some english language channels and some 'intellectuals' etc have bought this 'theory'. There is no distinction whatsoever-- all of them are geared to sing the same song, albeit, and at times, in different tunes.

Temporary: TMC is being paid back in the same coin-- defection from its ranks to BJP. Many leaders may migrate to BJP but my understanding is that it is Congress that would attract TMC workers and supporters to its fold in the long term. TMC would definitely be reduced to be a temporary Congress. Sooner the better.

Temporary Congress: TMC is a party of defectors. I have always maintained this is a temporary Congress and would evaporate sooner than latter. Today they have lost a sitting MLA and Minister to BJP. Many leaders would follow suit, toward BJP, the ruling party at the centre. However, TMC workers and voters, I hope, would shun BJP and join Congress. Slowly but steadily.

January 13, 2015

CBI calling: finally, inevitably it is CBI calling... at Mr. Mutual Roy's door. A call, not to be ignored. A call, in the making for months. Let interesting times ahead roll out fast.

Getting interesting : Delhi elections have been announced. Congress lost all the Lok Sabha seats and was distant third in the Assembly election. It is generally believed that the contest in Delhi is between BJP and AAP. Today's election result in Delhi cantonment was a bit surprising in this context. BJP won 5 seats, Congress 2 and AAP 1 . Congress came very close no 2 in 4 seats. By the way, all BJP supported candidates in Varanasi and in Lucknow cantonment board got defeated!

World united against terrorism in Paris. Let freedom flow. Let tolerance prevail.

Seems there is no end to " insight" and "knowledge" of Subrahmanyam Swamy. His latest is on Netaji. Well he is a BJP functionary. Let his party take some responsibility, declassify Netaji papers. After all BJP did promise to do so.

Millions march in Paris. A world united against terrorism. Let freedom flow. Let tolerance prevail.

January 10, 2015

Heard PM Modi's speech in his Delhi rally. It is full of rhetoric and quite inane. He is losing shine and conviction and would start losing elections.

January 9, 2015

"Terror Boat" : We are steadfast in our support of each and every effort of the government to protect and promote our national security and we compliment our security forces and intelligence apparatus. At the same time we are determined not to let political bravado and congratulatory stance of BJP to engage in publicity over the "terror boat" off the Gujarat coast. A number of pertinent questions have been put forth by leading national dailies and we have demanded that government should come out clean. The response of the government is still awaited. In the meanwhile utter confusion and glaring inconsistency is stark and crystal clear.

January 8, 2015

Strongly condemn the terrorist attack on Charlie Hebdo in Paris. No justification or excuse can wash away the crime. World must struggle against forces of terror and every community and religious group should join the effort.

January 7, 2015

I understand the steep fall in the sensex, by about 850 points in a day, is due to a mix of factors, principally international. The continuous fall of the oil prices in the international market however positive for India may also have certain negative consequences. This is due to interdependent effect of such volatility. We often do not realise how we are tied up and integrated with the world market, if not the world economy.

Chattisgarh: Congress has achieved an impressive win at all the levels in the keenly contested elections to civic bodies in Chattisgarh. Chief Minister of this BJP ruled state Mr. Raman Singh had extensively campaigned and had made the elections a prestigious issue. BJP has received a big jolt and it's campaign for a Congress must Bharat etc has become a butt of joke.

Slapping: I strongly condemn the incident involving slapping of Mr. Abhishek Bandopadhyay in a public programme of the TMC in East Midnapire. While TMC has a lot to explain for the wayward ways of its members and the Party's reliance on violence, there can be no justification whatsoever for the assault suffered by the TMC MP.

http://www.hindustantimes.com/…/surge…/article1-1302664.aspx

I strongly condemn slapping of TMC MP Abhishek Bandopadhyay. TMC has practised lawlessness in the state but there can be no excuse for this assault.

Strongly disapprove Minister Mr. Subrata Mukherjee's virtual defence and condonation of mob violence unleashed against Acharya who slapped Mr. Abhishek Bandopadhyay. Case has been registered against Acharya but action must also be taken against TMC members who almost lynched him, attacked journalists and police personnel. Government can not look away when a case is clearly made out against hoodlums who took law into their own hands.

January 4, 2015

College "elections": It is extraordinary that in West Bengal collecting and submitting nomination papers for election to students union in colleges and universities involve violence and street battles. It is Trinamool all the way. Their notorious ways has ensured no elections in colleges across south Bengal districts. Student organisations whether affiliated to Congress, CPI (M) or BJP have "failed" to file nominations and TMCP has "won" the elections uncontested!!

January 3, 2015

Congress Revival: today all 5 Congress MPs and three former PCC Presidents together with few of us met to discuss a strategy for revival of a Congress in the state. Adhir Chaudhury, PCC President has declared that PCC would organise a massive rally on 20th January at Shahid Minar. We discussed a number if issues and strategised a policy and programme centred action points against TMC misrule and divisive politics and ruinous economic downturn under BJP rule.

January 2, 2015

If BJP is getting readied to effect the mother of all U Turns in its desperation to be the juniour partner in a PDP led government in Jammu & Kashmir? Its desperation indicates such a possibility.

Most Dangerous: BJP government of Gujarat is trying to identify Muslims and Islam with terrorism. This is a dangerous stereotyping and religious profiling. This was caught on camera in the mock drill carried out by Surat police where the so called terrorists were mDe to wear skullcap and raise pro Islam slogan. All this is most dangerous and inimical to social cohesion of the country. BJP, RSS and its various item boys are out to polarise the society and all this would undermine our pluralistic culture. Apology by Gujarat Chief Minister is simply not enough. Government must rein in the rogue elements at the very least. However, the most talkative politician has become a taciturn.

A Hopeful Year Ahead: wishing all my friends, colleagues and students a new year of health and contentment. Let us all strive for our country so that it keeps on adding to its glory.

NEW YEAR WISH : Health and hope for all my friends and glory for our country. Welcome 2015.
